How human eye works (Physiology of Human eye) retina layer structure and function
Welcome to my youtube channel power of knowledge academy. In this video you will learn about function of human eye.
The human eye is a complex and highly specialized organ responsible for vision. It is capable of perceiving light and converting it into electrochemical impulses that the brain interprets as images.
Our eye help us to see things because of special sensitive layer called retina.
How Retina Functions
The retina of the human eye is a thin layer of tissue that's located on the inside back wall of the eye. It's responsible for receiving light that the lens has focused, converting the light into neural signals, and sending these signals on to the brain for visual recognition. The retina is composed of several types of cells, each with its unique function:
Photoreceptor Cells:
Rods: These cells are more numerous than cones and are more sensitive to low levels of light. They are primarily responsible for night vision and peripheral vision. Rods do not mediate color vision, which is why colors are more challenging to distinguish in low-light conditions.
Cones: Cones are responsible for color vision and are primarily active in well-lit conditions. They are concentrated in the fovea, the central area of the retina, where visual acuity (sharpness) is highest. There are three types of cones sensitive to different wavelengths of light, corresponding to red, green, and blue colors.
Bipolar Cells: These cells act as a conduit between the photoreceptors (rods and cones) and ganglion cells. They transmit signals from the photoreceptors to the ganglion cells. Bipolar cells are crucial for the initial processing of visual information, including aspects of brightness, contrast, and color.
Ganglion Cells: The axons of ganglion cells converge to form the optic nerve, which carries visual information to the brain. Ganglion cells integrate and process the visual information received from bipolar cells and are the final output neurons of the vertebrate retina. They respond to light intensity and are critical for the formation of images that our brains can interpret.
Horizontal Cells: These cells are interneurons that connect photoreceptors and bipolar cells. They play a critical role in the integration and regulation of input from multiple photoreceptor cells, contributing to the retina's ability to adjust to various light levels and enhancing contrast through lateral inhibition.
Amacrine Cells: Like horizontal cells, amacrine cells are interneurons that play a significant role in the retina's inner plexiform layer, where they influence the transmission of signals between bipolar cells and ganglion cells. They are involved in complex image processing tasks, such as motion detection and adjusting to changes in visual stimuli.
Müller Cells: These are the principal glial cells in the retina, providing structural support and playing a crucial role in the maintenance of the retinal integrity. They are involved in light guidance, ionic balance regulation, and neurotransmitter recycling.
Pigmented Epithelial Cells: These cells lie behind the photoreceptors and are essential for their health and functionality. They absorb excess light to prevent scattering, recycle retinoid compounds for the visual cycle, and phagocytose shed portions of photoreceptors, maintaining the photoreceptors' health and functionality.
